NOTICE OF RACE 

‘Round the Island Race  

 

 

 The Edgartown Yacht Club ‘Round the Island (RTI) Race will be held at Edgartown, Massachusetts on Saturday, July 12, 2008. The Edgartown Yacht Club (“EYC”) is the organizing authority.

 

1.      RULES

1.1 The Regatta will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008 (“the RRS”) the IRC Rules; the PHRF New England Rules; the ISAF Special Regulations for offshore and ocean racing category 4 (including the US Prescriptions to those regulations) and the class rules for eligible one-design classes.  

1.2 Rules 62.2 and 66 will be changed to shorten the time limit for requests for redress and requests to reopen a hearing.   

1.3 Racing Rule 44.2 will not apply (see Section 10 PENALTY SYSTEM)

2.      ADVERTISING 

Advertising will be restricted to Category A   

3.     ELIGIBILITY and ENTRY                  

3.1 Boats entered must be owned by, or under charter to, members of yacht clubs affiliated with USSA.

Class sizes will be limited to not fewer than five boats, subject to exceptions made by the Race Committee, and the decision of the Committee as to the acceptance of any entry or the constitution of any class or division will be at the entire discretion of the Committee and will not be subject to protest, recourse or appeal.  

3.2  Eligible boats may enter by completing the registration form and sending it, together with the required fee, to the Edgartown Yacht Club Race Committee, One Dock Street, Edgartown, Massachusetts 02568 on or before 0900 hrs., Friday, July 11, 2008.  

3.3  The Edgartown Yacht Club may, in its sole discretion, accept any late entry.  

 

3.4  A representative from each yacht shall check in with the Race Committee Office to complete registration prior to 1600 hrs. on Friday, July 11, 2008.  

3.5 Each boat shall fly from her backstay at least five feet above the deck an international code flag numeral pennant corresponding to the number of the class to which she has been assigned. This pennant shall be flown from the time of the warning signal for the relevant class until the boat has finished and cleared the finishing area.

4.      FEES 

The registration fee for all classes is $90.00. 

5.      SCHEDULE OF EVENTS  

The Race will be held on July 12, 2008 with the first warning signal at 0800 hours.  

6.     MEASUREMENTS 

Each boat participating in IRC or PHRF shall produce a valid endorsed or unendorsed IRC or PHRF certificate.  

7.      SAILING INSTRUCTIONS         

        Sailing Instructions will be available from the Edgartown Yacht Club Race Committee Office, One Dock Street, Edgartown, Massachusetts 02539 or from the EYC website (www.edgartownyc.org) on Friday, July 11.  Preliminary versions may be available for earlier review.   

8.      VENUE  

The Race will be around Martha’s Vineyard Island: in Nantucket Sound, the Atlantic Ocean, and Vineyard Sound.  

9.     THE COURSE 

The course will be a clockwise circumnavigation of Martha’s Vineyard, from Edgartown. The distance is 55 nautical miles. The course is depicted in the chart below.

     

10.      PENALTY SYSTEM  

The 720° turn penalty will not apply. A boat on the course side of the starting line at its starting signal which does not thereafter properly cross the starting line will be penalized by an adjustment increasing her corrected time for scoring purposes by seven minutes, provided, however, that any such boat which is more than two of its boat lengths on the course side may be disqualified at the discretion of the Committee. 

Scoring Penalty Rule 44.3 will be in effect.

11.      SCORING 

The scoring will be IRC (without the requirement of endorsed certificates) and PHRF.  Within PHRF there will be two divisions:  Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker.

12.     RADIO COMMUNICATION

         A boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats.  This restriction also applies to mobile telephones. 

 

14.     PRIZES

Prizes will be given as follows:  

 

a.) For First, Second and Third place in each class  
b.) The Great Venona Trophy for First in IRC  
c.) The Venona Trophy for First in PHRF  
d.) Commodore’s Concord Cup for the first yacht to finish  
e.) The Martha’s Vineyard Ocean Race Perpetual Trophy for the EYC Yacht with the best corrected time in each division

f.)

The Yacht Club Team Trophy for the 3-yacht team with the best aggregate low-point score.  Yacht clubs with 6 or more entries may have more than one team enter for this prize, but team memberships must be notified to the Race Committee before the first warning signal.

 

15.     DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY   

        Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk.  (See rule 4, Decision to Race.)  The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.
